Even if it has been milked to death at this point, I still love the concept here and the resurgence of horror anthologies it helped spark. It's strayed away from this in latter sequels, but I love that the wraparound here was directly tied to a VHS tape and had a decent story about that. Most of the shorts felt like breakout shorts, rather than seasoned work, although the first segment was fantastic - makes me want to watch more in the series now.

Not only is it tough to make a good sequel from someone else's original, but doing it when the original was horrid - that's an accomplishment. Feeling like something out the Conjuring universe, Mike Flanagan establishes himself as a solid director with this haunted house appetizer, and would go on a great run with Netflix after this. Related to this, I do think this would have worked better as a mini-series in order to achieve better pacing in the scares.

What could have been a very effective horror using a mix of a cool setting and prominent fear turns into a pandering extravaganza that borders on satirical levels. Any tension is immediately sapped by the use of every political phrase imaginable. Beyond the pitiful dialogue, it breaks the golden rule of movies with this setup - have a likeable or interesting main character.

I love the bleakness of the setting that only British horror seems to be able to achieve, amplified by the terror in the unknown of the past. Sean Harris plays the part perfectly here, accompanied by the sentient(?) titular character. There is a lot of beauty in the despair with these haunting visuals and story segments lingering after the credits have run. I have a feeling this will be one I appreciate more on each subsequent viewing.
