Don’t think a movie has ever made me cry this much. Sitting there holding my girlfriend tight as we both bawled thinking the story had ended… and then the real end happening and the tears continuing to flow was something I’ll never forget. This movie is beautiful and makes you ache for beautiful reasons.

There are few things in life more crushing than seeing beauty nearly realized only to be stripped away. We see it now, we’ve always seen it, and this film does an incredible job of illustrating the the hopelessness of that experience. You hurt for everyone (except Fonny’s mom), as they try to realize that beauty once again after having it torn away violently. You hurt for those whose lives this film sheds light on, for the experiences and anecdotes that inspired…
Very interesting and unique idea but not sure if it was fully realized. The metaphor behind the vertical prison was simple enough that it could be applied to a number of things but it seemed that the director may have traded some world-building, character, and plot development for gory, cannibalistic fun. Felt like I may have been doing some of the work for the director when it came to understanding his vision. Overall, definitely a good watch but you may walk into the first few scenes feeling like you’re going to watch a social commentary but you probably won’t walk out that way.
