When I was five years old, I loved watching excavators, backhoes and bulldozers at construction sites. To my developing brain, they were visually captivating and allowed for imaginative play. However, as I grew older, I began to see how they were used as machines of destruction and genocide, particularly in places like Palestine.

Basel never experienced joy from watching a bulldozer. From his first memories, they always represented pain.

    Red Rooms

    ★★★★½

Red Rooms is one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve seen in years, tackling society’s morbid obsession with true crime in an unsettling, subversive and thought-provoking manner. The direction is impeccable, guiding us through the mysterious life of someone caught in a nightmarish web. Despite the heavy subject matter, the film thankfully avoids gratuitous violence, instead relying on sound design and our imagination to fuel the horror. An equally uncomfortable and engrossing watch, Red Rooms will linger long after the credits end.

This film is my catnip. A sleek story of spies and lies. Propulsive pacing and delicious character dynamics. One of my favorites of the year. Can easily see Black Bag becoming an espionage cult classic.

Have you been disappointed by villains in movies lately? Have you wondered to yourself, "what if the most fearsome force in the multiverse was a clout-hungry, genocidal robotic coconut?" Well, then Night of the Coconut was made for you!

For the uninitiated, Night of the Coconut is a "season finale" to a couple years worth of build-up from short narrative segments bookending Patrick Willem's YouTube video essays. What began as a silly creative exercise with his friends ballooned into a feature…

Justin Hurwitz conducting the score of La La Land live to the film with the Seattle Symphony will be a memory I cherish for the rest of my life.
