The Ascent 1977
It has taken me a 24 hour period to recover from this masterpiece. I write about it now after having thought long and hard.
This movie took my breath away in the sense that I felt winded at many of the scenes in it. There is something so positively lost and desperate about the way this story is portrayed. Something so severe and cold about the script. Something so dreadful about its title. There is a realization that occurs here…

So, this film is visually stunning.
It’s like if a kaleidoscope ate some psychoactive chemicals and decided to study colour theory on the way to the directors chair where it saw a guy and wanted him painted red from head to toe. I know that doesn’t give you anything, but it gives me a lot to tell you that.

Indigo Norbo is as extreme as they come. An absolute genius left to her own devices will produce an absolute master piece; It’s a tale as old as time and its foolish to expect anything less from such an esteemed creator. Legends will be written of this genius in life.

A very well-made film that I have some minor grievances with mainly concerning its seeming inability to figure out whether it wants to satirise or faithfully portray the upper-crusted, belly-busted wealth of the 1760s-70s.
I love the shots. I love the script. I think, though, that the brilliant acting of all of the women in this film is undersold by how infrequently they are allowed screen time.
