Really enjoyed nearly every minute of this. The animation was in the classic vein wherein every frame is utilized fully, but also reminds me of the evolving theatrical style at the turn of the century, and felt like the natural evolution of that had it not been halted and hobbled for a quarter century to kowtow to the advent of 3D in the west.

All this to say it’s a great movie made with a lot of love, and Zaslav…

The most beautiful film of 2024. What can be said about this that hasn’t already been said? It’s gorgeously and evocatively animated and most importantly it treats the audience with respect and allows for the flow of imagination. Difficult to think of another film that asks the audience to bring whatever they feel to it. Again; it is so beautiful and each viewing cuts a layer deeper towards the human condition, with no humans present. Clearly an incredible work of art; it will only gain more strength as time passes by.

There’s a lot to unpack here but the biggest takeaways are as follows:

    1. Toho had an ex-physicist write a Godzilla script.

    2. Best iteration of Jet Jaguar HANDS DOWN.

Cassavetes-level uncomfortable realism. The great thing about Anno is one can be extremely familiar with his style and chosen subject matters, but still be wholly unprepared for the density of and the experience taking in any given work he creates.

Unsurprisingly this is some of my favorite cinematography/editing ever. Incredibly grateful to have been able to see it for the first time in a theater. Definitely need a second viewing for the film itself to sink in fully, though.
