  The Zone of Interest 2023

  I’ve heard people say that this is an “important” film, which generally means “it’s boring but it’s about something serious so you can’t admit that”

  Having watched it, I can confirm it’s an important film, but in the sense that it demands attention. An indictment of moral complacency, the juxtaposition of domestic pettiness with half-glimpsed and hinted at horrors is chilling enough that to look away feels like complicity.

  With the sub-plots and relationship dramas of the original novel stripped away, this film could very easily have lost something. Instead, it makes the novels points hit home even harder with the simplicity of the telling.

  Commando 1985

  I wish I could enjoy this in the same sort of semi-ironic a lot of people in the pictures I was in did. They seemed to be having a good time, judging from the giggles behind me. But ultimately this slice of cheesy, homoerotic, hyper-masculine Americana left me cold.

  I’m not normally a fan of stuff that’s twee or aggressively “oh, we’re so bloody ENGLISH, aren’t we!”  But c’mon, man.  

  The Norbots sing a little song while they work. Wallace cries and calls Gromit his best pal. They play Cape Feare music while Feathers McGraw does pull-ups in the zoo. I’m only human, FFS.
