  the film flops because it assumes the viewer can’t handle the duality of a complicated person with an incredible talent and musical legacy. but the live performances and backstage footage make the whole thing worth watching. her daughter who co-directed the film says at the beginning that she didn’t feel like she actually knew her mother and at nearly 2 hours, neither did I.

  Beverly Johnson’s reaction to the racist words of Diana Vreeland and the interviews with Donyale’s sisters are the authentic center of this fascinating but unfocused and filtered look at a forgotten icon. also the film’s denial and ignorance over people who struggle with substances and mental health are a real disservice.
