Occasionally charming, mostly frustrating. It's best described as a collection of short comedy sketches that are usually solved by violence. How will our heroes escape the village of Amazon women? Violence. How will our heroes escape from this haunted manor? Violence. It's generally pretty good violence--Jackie Chan wanders in from time to time to make sure of that--but there's not enough of it. There's a lot of comedy, though, and it's rough.

The top third of every frame is just for Shaq. All the actors stand around him, their faces vertically centered, and the only thing that exists in that top third is Shaq's enormous, smiling face. When someone talks to Shaq they have to crane their head as far back as possible like they're trying to look up at the sun, and when Shaq talks back the camera looks up at him with reverence and awe. It's bizarre and disorienting and I think Shaq should be in more movies just so we can see how directors tackle this unique logistical problem.

From the first moments of episode one, with Zeon soldiers huddled around a campfire and telling each other ghost stories about the haunted forest on the edge of their camp, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance identifies itself as a horror movie. The Gundam franchise has flirted with horror before--check out the scene in Cucuruz Doan's Island where the Gundam ambushes two Zeon soldiers underground--but I don't think any Gundam property has ever so fully adopted the tropes and images of horror…
