  I'm keen to see the sequel because I'm really not sure how they can stretch this out to another 2.5 hours. That said, this is actually...pretty good? It's cheap and nasty with some impressive practical effects and well-executed tension. Art the Clown is somehow both frightening and endearing, punctuating his vicious kills with some nicely camp gags.

  "How can a film starring Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace possibly be bad?", you might ask. Well Daniel Espinosa's grim, sluggish, muddled Soviet thriller Child 44 has all the answers.

  Hardy is always magnetic on screen and even saddled with an iffy Russian accent, he gives a compelling enough performance as Leo, the MGB agent at the centre of the film's two stories, both of which could've made a better film on their own.
