McQueen throws you right into the action in the opening scene. Heavy bombs are falling from the sky; people are desperately trying to put out the roaring fires that have erupted; screams everywhere.
I found it impossible to watch this without thinking of the images I had been seeing all throughout the day of the people buring alive at the Al-Aqsa Hospital as a result of American/Israeli bombs.
I wonder if McQueen was thinking at all about the present day…
Having young women in your car play your Patti Smith and Van Morrisson cassettes and really liking the music, even commenting on how "it sounds great on cassette", seems like the ultimate male boomer fantasy.
For a 3 hours long movie it's better paced, more tonally consistent and more fun than, say, Lord of the Rings. I especially enjoyed the scenes of the blossoming friendship between the central characters. But I have some reservations.
I don't care much for long choreographed action scenes. They make me feel numb and empty. But that's just me and I don't want that to be the focus, because the thing is: in theory I welcome Indian hunks slaying British…
