I'm not convinced this has much to say about civil war, even in America, other than that it is/would be horrifically violent and intractable, or war correspondence, other than that it's dangerous, courageous, and traumatic. But Garland is skilled at altering familiar landscapes in ways that are all the more unsettling by how few events from possible they seem. Plenty of the composition and editing is chilling and visceral, even if seems overly influenced by clip culture. A shame that…

A Complete Unknown 2024
Impressive on the level of one well known person mimicking another, which is exciting in a carnivalesque way. It's a gratifying way to appreciate the actor's craft, with Chalamet doing well to convey Dylan's life force as well as imitate his mannerisms. That goes some way to filling the void left by the film's refusal to pass comment on or show much interest in Dylan's artistry beyond a meticulously ordinary recounting of where and when things happened, and what people…

Finding Vivian Maier 2013
Interesting in spite of the filmmaker's ineptitude. Maier's ex-employers dominate the talking heads. Sadly, their lack of insight is painful, obsessing over inanities like her funny hats, stiff walk, decision not to marry or have children, and disinterest in "happiness and light" news stories. Outside of their prattle, the filmmakers almost completely ignore the ownership issues surrounding Maier's work, the politics of the eras she photographed, or the reasons why art establishments chose not to display her work. It's also ironic how dull the cinematography is considering the film's subject.

Nosferatu 2024
Low-balling this somewhat harshly. Not so much because it fails at what it tries to do as because what it does is so far from what I want from a dracula story. Murnau's Nosferatu and Dreyer's Vampyr are my ideals because their vampires truly seem to cling to life. They're hideous and pathetic as well as deeply menacing, and both movies communicate that visually in their use of stillness and shadow. This on the other hand is all fireworks and spectacle: booming soundtrack, hulking Orlock, and a camera that never sits still. Even the black and white feels jammed in your face.
