The reverse storytelling nature of this film resulted in a fascinating effect for me. Since I have been so used to images, movies and shows centering around South-Korean soldiers mostly dealing with the NK border or just going through their training, the deployment scene in Peppermint Candy totally caught me off guard. Since we started around the turn of the millenium and the first movie that springs to mind from that era was JSA, I subconsciously expected this scene to…

    Espionage, betrayal and forbidden love.
This tale is told through the lens of a triangle of characters connecting and clashing in the interbellum of Korea. At first, I was a bit puzzled what kind of film this was gonna be, since it was proudly produced by the Ministry of Defense. Something I was starting to slightly forget as The Country Left Behind regularly shines. Kim Seung-ho outright pops out of the scene, as he plays a fantastic supporting role as…

    Laugh timing different
Why don't show all sign language
Dark stories in light drama tone

Also, this was filmed literally around the corner from where I used to live during my semester in Korea. It's a popular area for filming, but still wild to see it on a big screen!

I'll extend the review later, because not long after this film we were attacked with eggs from a car. Still in shock

Originally I thought of this as the lockdown movie to end all lockdown movies, but admit that might be a bit narrow-minded. Especially now that people seem to be enjoying another lockdown type film (Inside).

I do want to state that what I consider a lockdown film is a movie that was largely produced and released during or just after lockdown, while incorporating elements of our (temporary) changed way of life. I'm sure we will get plenty of reflective movies…

Major props to the visuals. The colour tones, outfits and sets are pretty and fit the gentle tone of the film.

The film meanders through people's lives and touched upon an astounding number of issues. Class is stressed, but the film does not shy away from touching upon everything that life consists of. Friendship, tradition versus modernity, marriage, heritage, family and work are some of the major themes throughout. Sadly, what this results in is a film that fails to…
