  Two summers ago, I took a history class in the Loire Valley where we visited almost all the chateaux in this film over the course of a month! Seeing them again through Varda’s eyes is making my heart twinge a lot… 

  Admittedly, I was miserable at the time, repeatedly declared the city of Tours ‘a hole’, and vowed to never step foot into a chateau again. The passage of time has a remarkable way of transmuting one’s memory </3

  Belladonna of Sadness is celebrated as a feminist masterpiece as often as it’s lampooned for being another misogynist sexploitation film. I understand the controversy completely, but to define my stance in one sentence: no matter how many watercolors one uses to paint it, rape is not art.

  Sexual violence was a given coming into this movie, but it’s simultaneously presented as a voyeuristic spectacle for the viewer while being treated in the narrative as suffering and trauma (which it is).…
