I think Charlie Chaplin had more creativity and talent in his finger than I do in my whole body lol. there are very few films that show the breadth of human emotion that city lights does, and even fewer that do so with as much subtlety, wit, passion, and charm. the whole boxing match sequence is maybe the peak of physical comedy; just when you think it's about to start dragging on too long, Chaplin flips everything upside down with…

A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jef...

solid noir that upheld it's air of mystique right until the credits rolled, often a rare feat. alain delons cool composure is a compelling force, both calculating and tragic. I really liked the minimal but progressive score and the production design (the labyrinthian police station was incredible). one of my favorite moments was when the cops bugging his house decided against using a giant radio in favor of a small one lmao I have to believe that was intended to be humorous.

more reddit humory than I remember; definitely a product of its era. but the disaster drama is still good and damon is unbelievably charismatic. every triumph or failure watney experiences elicits an ear-to-ear grin or a morbid wince, keeping the audience eagerly awaiting his next move. I think this was my first rewatch where I tried to keep a mental note of the chronology and it made his efforts seem even more visceral calculating how many sols it took him to do this or that. cast is solid all around so I want to highlight Mckenzie Davis's smaller role; she's absolutely adorable. 7 or 7.5
