    We joke about the Theater Experience a lot on here but I’ve seen this more times than I can count and there is still nothing like seeing it on IMAX. 

    The last hurrah for a certain kind of movie and a quantum leap forward for another.

    Even beyond the obvious foreshadowing of Ridley's love for duels, codes of honor, and historical warfare, I think this is an early display of his (sometimes neglected) talent for atmosphere. The interiors are cozy but not stuffy in a way that plenty of period dramas fall prey to. The stretch during Napoleon's doomed Russia campaign is downright apocalyptic, with handfuls of frozen corpses dotting the vast, eerie expanse of snow. The final duel is tremendous, two men squaring off literally…

    The groan I let out when the card flashes to TEL AVIV was that of an already defeated man. That was about 15 mins in.

    Wanted to find something to redeem this one because of how hard people have been mobbing on it. Turns out the mob is right! Absolute doo doo, weirdly cynical in how it manipulates its trans lead to bill itself as “timely political film” instead of “masturbatory cis French director vanity project”. Which isn’t a line I usually take but man!!!

    Many (rightfully) subscribe to the idea that Comedy and Horror are sister genres but what's even more impressive than seeing them in harmony is to see Aster play their estranged mother Tragedy in the same key. Beau genuinely feels like The Odyssey in the sense that some stretches are very fast and literal while some wander into the psychodrama wilderness for what feels like years. Some moments are so parabolic that they feel Biblical. Not as conventionally scary as Hereditary…
