I think The Insider wanted to go to a place that has been very well explored in The Prince Of The City. But it was less impactful than I was hoping for - partially because the big reveal is so obvious in 2024 but probably wasn’t back in the 80s/90s
The way Past Lives deals with “feels so right but it isn’t meant to be” is so mature and positive. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t change my perspective (maybe just momentarily but still) on my relationships. I left the theatre having a deep admiration for all 3 characters, with the husband being my favourite. I think that’s quite rare given the premise of the movie. Also, at some point during the film, I’ve realized it is constraint that creates meaning in our lives. It forces change and inspires a deeper understanding of ourselves. Loved this film for what it left me with 💗
BOLD, GRAND, AMBITIOUS.
Babylon contains within itself multiple stories that could be features themselves. I watched Damien at TIFF talk about Babylon and what led him to make this film. He said the wildest notions today of early Hollywood are usually not wild enough and that it takes a fair bit of insanity to make an industry out of a desert. Ofc, he delivered on that vision and ideas.
