    A slight disappointment, I'm afraid. Having watched the first instalment and heard everyone talking this up, I put off watching it till I had read the book, and I'm glad I did. This, visually spectacular as it is, is just a recreation of the major scenes from the book, with little continuity or narrative flow. Without the source material I wouldn't have known what was going on.

    I can't understand why this movie isn't better known. I had never heard of it till a couple of months ago (on Letterboxd), even though:
    (i) It was directed by William Friedkin, who had recently directed The French Connection and The Exorcist
