Normally only add movies that inspire me, but this was really annoying. I really dislike the whole tone of self-important male gaze marinating the film.
It took some group reflection, but I feel like the beating heart of the movie is encapsulated when David asks how one lives up to the overwhelming grief, hope and expectations from such a difficult past,
what it means to carry that hybrid identity after generations and worlds away. It also brings up how much romanticisation or self-burdening plays a role in making sense of that past.
Eisenberg and Culkin really animate the movie, and Benji makes all the notes…
The best film I have ever watched. Mesmerising portrait of the sociology of profound social-economic change, of tragedy and the wounds embedded within us, all through a lens of weaving memory work. A rolling emotional journey of tremendous humanity. Wang Xiaoshuai has touched the ceiling with this masterpiece.
Following popular demand I have buckled under pressure, and provide my review here:
Coraline was very vibey. The atmosphere was fab, very moody. Beautiful animation. I think it spooks the targeted age group very appropriately. The tension was properly prickly. The pacing felt a bit off towards the end, somehow it both ended at the right time yet also felt a tad underemphasised. A solid 7.5
