This is a very weird movie. It goes out of its way to not take itself seriously but that unfortunately includes a 20 minute intro that adds nothing to the movie. Once it gets going it does have some genuinely hilarious moments and lines and starring brothers grow on you. Moranis shows glimpses of some of his later, better work.
Great vistas, great characters played by a legendary cast, and a great plot make for one amazing Western. Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman are perfect. The entire film mocks the heroizing of killers that is so often seen in the genre — all while producing maybe the genre’s best work. A morality play well presented. It narrows in closely on one ethical hypothetical and lays it out well. For that reason it is engaging, thought provoking, but ultimately a little small. Some plot gripes are inevitable in a story like this and endings rarely satisfy everyone but this movie did what it tries to do and did it well. Worth a watch, not a rewatch.
This film is one of the first “man with no name” archetypes and inspired numerous copycats. To my surprise, it has not aged well. Mifune is captivating in the lead as usual, there are plenty of beautiful shots that show off Kurosawa’s legendary talents, and some of the lines are genuinely interesting and/or funny — but those positives are nestled within some glaringly outdated storytelling.
