Anyone who was inspired and moved by the messages of overcoming racial hatred, discrimination, and prejudice in In the Heat of the Night will greatly enjoy this film. It covers the same topics, but an amazing 17 years earlier. I lost track of the number of times I said during this movie, "I can't believe they made this in 1950!" Excellent film depicting the cycle of violence in the slums of Rio de Janeiro and the impact on the lives of those caught up in the cycle. Important film for those looking to expand their perspectives and stretch their understanding of the challenges residents of other countries face. Given that violence is a central part of the story and the basis for much of the action and plot, I had to subtract half a point because the characters rarely seemed to reload their guns or worry about having enough bullets.

A strong Sidney Poitier performances anchors the film and earned it the rating I gave it. After having seen so many other films that depict the story of a teacher facing a rowdy group of underperforming students, I found it interesting to see this covered from a British point of view.
