Brutal in the right ways. If Sayra’s third act twist felt more organically motivated and less like a plot mechanic (and even partially explained away via a psychic?? Cmon) this could be higher. That decision though felt so undercutting in a movie that otherwise had so many trappings that made it feel real.

Still it’s brutal and beautiful in all the best ways. Not sure Fukunaga will ever touch the electricity of That One Scene in True Detective but ever manage it once. Still the camera is dynamic and informative and evocative.

When talking about this movie with a group of friends that I still feel the need to impress I pronounced Ralph Fiennes the dumb American way and I’m still thinking about it.

Also this movie was fun and had great “people in rooms talking” vibes. Lots of old white dudes really cooking. I have not the faintest clue why there’s the twist or what it’s supposed to say/mean. It feels entirely unnecessary and unearned and tacked on. It made me drop the rating half a star, maybe.

While defending this movie (on Facebook of all places, God help me), I balked at the OP calling the sex scenes “gratuitous” and protested that there wasn’t even nudity! The movie is so damn long I’d actually forgotten that you see Adrian’s Pianist in like the first 20 minutes.

Anyways, this movie is good! But I think it’s more interesting to talk/think about than it is to watch? I could be wrong about this and I’ll probably burn another 3.5…
