the animal abuse is insane but otherwise its good. but it’s pretty insane. just a shame really. tarkovsky becomes the image of cruelty he’s trying to depict in the tartars and russian raiders. at a point, if you have to actually harm and kill an animal to achieve realism, you are just failing at realism. it makes you feel a lot though. i feel conflicted about it because it is quite amazing, but also very disturbing in how it was made.
