As someone who considers disaster movies my favorite sub-genre of film, I really wanted to like this. Unfortunately it stinks. For such an interesting premise Last Breath falls totally flat and leans way too much into over-sentimentality. It’s the kind of cheesy and on-the-nose thing that Michael Bay would make, but Bay is trying to make something fun and this needed to be way more grounded and sincere than it is. The dialogue is awful, the talented cast are stiff…

Remember Mark Wahlberg said he would’ve stopped 9/11?
Anyway, tried to think of any redeeming aspects of this but there are none, so 0.5/5. Mel Gibson is obviously a bad dude but didn’t think he was this bad a filmmaker. Plot is nonsense and full of holes, and dialogue feels like it was written by a 12 year old boy. Also possible that Wahlberg just ad-libbed all the gross, incel shit he was doing in this.
Can we not give Topher Grace something good to do?

The Brutalist 2024
I just didn’t get what everyone else seems to love about this film. I agree it’s an amazing achievement of filmmaking given the budget, but it just fell flat for me. There was a lot of promise in the first half but the wheels came off and it eventually started to feel like an exercise in Oscar bait mad libs. Tortured genius? Tick. War? Tick. Racist commentary? Tick. Addiction? Tick. Etc..
I honestly hated Brody’s character from start to finish…

As much as I love Angels, I think maybe someone more important than Robbie deserved a Biopic this great. The ending was a little Catalina Wine Mixer for me, but otherwise top marks.
