The Night House 2020
Horror is the genre that most unabashedly deals with death, and a good horror movie can convey something of that existential anguish and terror death inspires. The Night House has a "basic trickery" of its own: it lures you in posing as a predictable haunted house story with sprinkles of dark character secrets, but the story soon turns labyrinthine as reality melds with dreams. There are horror clichés aplenty, but they are used effectively and meaningfully, even touchingly at times. This film is for people who like ghostly jump scares, but even more so, like unveiling the nature of the ghosts that haunt us.
