Footloose 1984
The sex panic of today with the jeans of 1984. The ambivalence I feel about Kevin Bacon’s hotness is unreal. This is the kind of film where the one-sentence plot summary brings a shocking pleasure unmatched by watching. But I still loved it cause teens writhing on tractors to Bonnie Tyler is sublime.

was literally just saying this week that it’s wild that Burroughs lived to comment on Cobain and then it’s Come As You Are as the anachronistic soundtrack to Daniel Craig thirsting. not sure what to say about this one other than that it’s equally impossible to be faithful to this novel and to riff on it … lots to love here about desire and disavowal but the parts of the novel that are subsumed or implied loom large. lots of ppl saying it’s Space Odyssey but for me it’s Adaptation. Brooks: romanticism wrecks it.

The film never explains why the mum is such a reckless driver but I don’t mind! She is a stone cold babe. Had to watch dubbed version for kid’s sake and Brooks said that the casting of Liam Neeson meant that the mermaid dude reads as the Taken character in a more aquatic and high camp register. Great observation.
