Utterly grim. I asked my gf to watch something with me and she said her usual caveat 'nothing horror, nothing too full on'......whoops, turned out to be one of the most hopless and violent films I have seen. So engaging, firmly placed as a stable of the 'gritty serial killer' genre.

Elevator to the Gallows 1958
Très cool, très romantique, très noir.
Loved so much about this, directing, cinematography, acting, runtime and pacing, stand out score from the great Miles Davis.

Alien: Romulus 2024
Staying over night for work in Melbourne. Nothing else to be at. $13 tickets. Rolled the dice that I would at least be mildly entertained. Well, blast me out the air lock and tell me to get away from you biatch cuz this was alot of fun. So glad I didn't miss this on the big screen with the big sound.

Major Dundee 1965
The conflict between Heston and Harris under pins a theme of conflict (noble or foolhardy), loyalty (to your duty, country or friends) and legacy (the failed drunken commander, the immigrant rebel, the victorious hero) and it elevates this beyond a generic cowboys and Indians movie. Add to that a cracker script and screenplay and all the Peckipah trademarks with some amazing shots making the most of the Mexican scenery.
Would sit firmly on my 'must see' Westerns list and would happily watch a longer cut
