Part 2 of my belated David Lynch post-mortem retrospective.
I loved Inland Empire on rewatch. I’d like to think Lynch intended for it to be seen in a dirty, empty movie theater hidden in the depths of a nearly-defunct shopping mall on a hot, humid Saturday afternoon. There was a low, humming drone coming from the theater’s air conditioning for almost all of the runtime, which lulled me into this semi-conscious state, which, in turn, helped my brain “roll with the punches” to the free jazz ensemble of memories and dreams

Near perfect cast (chock full of Lynch regulars) with outstanding performances across the board. I don’t have enough good things to say about Laura Dern in particular - the earnestness of her character lit up the screen from the moment she was introduced and her radical optimism in the face of all this violence, cruelty, and cynicism feels like an embodiment of the larger statement…

Definitely worth some, but maybe not all of the hype. I didn’t mind the length at all, especially with the intermission. The ~200 minute runtime went by in a flash. Like many others have said, the visuals are outstanding - every single shot in the movie is immaculately blocked, lit, framed and colored. The color palette changes a few times but all of them look equally rich, whether it be a weathered urban facade covered in sleet or a boundless…
