  River Phoenix's portrayal of Mikey Waters is powerful and pathetic, like a car crash that you're unable to look away from. The way he embodies the tics and neuroses of the character make watching this an uncomfortable yet moving experience.

  This is such a timeless film, and its influence on queer cinema is undeniable and is only further cemented by the continued homages that its descendants in queer media continue to pay it.

  Challengers for the Terminally Kinky.

  The story comes close to showcasing several interesting dynamics but never quite gets there … which is some real meta-storytelling for a movie about the consequences of unfulfilled sexual desires. 

  I wish the characters weren’t so predictable and the relationships so surface. Unfortunately, it ended up giving high-production value Wattpad.
