  Maybe one of the best directorial debuts ever??? The perfectly crafted tension, the wonderful acting, the production design that drops us right into 90’s Chicago so subtly. This is the stuff of hard-boiled dyke legend.

  There is no greater understanding of the idea that reading a movie’s themes, production values, ideological underpinnings, and everything else is made by the dialectical relationship between the viewer(s) and the text than a packed out late night showing at the Music Box full of queer sex workers and their friends (and probably more than a few pervs just there for the tits & ass) of a masterpiece like Showgirls. Paul Verhoeven understands the structural rot and the way that individuals fighting against it as individuals will never succeed.
