Last Year at Marienbad 1961
this captured the feeling of limerence (fantasizing about being with someone who doesn't really want that but likes you enough to humor it) better than anything I've ever seen. pretty haunting
or it could have been about longing for a dead person, or longing for a person you yourself killed. it was pretty open ended in a relatively artful way
great visuals and sound design too!

The Last Showgirl 2024
I'm being a bit generous about this one, maybe - I thought the pensive, moody scenes that were effectively interludes in between the parts with dialogue were fantastic. I'd like to rewatch just those on their own
the fundamental problem with this movie is that the acting and directing are good but it's not enough to get you invested in the characters. in other words, the script is kind of shoddy and one-note.

I Saw the TV Glow 2024
occasionally the 90s/00s twee aesthetic grated, and I almost always hate when characters break the fourth wall. but those issues are mitigated by the fact that it completely interrogated and expressed the full depth of its mood. the identity allegory was also quite powerful. I'd say this is one of my five favorites of 2024.
the phrase "lynchian" is painfully overused to describe anything remotely weird but this is actually lynchian in a respectable way that isn't derivative

Nosferatu 2024
this was literally hard to watch because of the composition. I'm not impressed by the cinematic flex of using natural lighting because of an applicable time period - I couldn't see a god damn thing. "shrill" is another word that comes to mind. the characters were almost always yelling and the sound mixing was overbearing from beginning to end. there are some decent performances and it's worth watching once but I prefer herzog's version.
