There’s a bit of a lull (perhaps thematically accurate) between the big moment and when the climax begins, but there’s just so much terrific stuff in both the first half and last ~quarter that I forgive it happily.

The Lady from Shanghai 1947
Pretty terrific movie, but I can’t help but look longingly at the cracks where more movie should be. Lots of moments where you can very obviously tell stuff was ripped clean out and it makes for a plot that really is rushed more than it should
Welles’ accent is probably the only complaint I have otherwise, very inconsistent and when it shines through strongly it’s quite bad

Top Gun: Maverick is unabashedly a retread of the 1986 original, but unlike the original, Maverick sets aside time to explore relationships and trauma instead of using it as just visual hooks. Goose's death is emotional but it's taken 36 years to have an interesting reflection on how it emotionally scarred the people close to him.
