Ever since I saw Hale County, I knew Ramell Ross had something special. He clearly understands the implications of framing stories, people, and history. He understands the medium. This is a story and subject matter that I will always have a complicated relationship with, but Ross’ control and style is undeniable. I think this carefully navigates around being a film for white audience members to be educated, with some shots being so firmly set in black experience (especially Ellis-Taylor’s performance)…

The Brutalist 2024
Ambitious and brave until the end, remaining focused on its themes before truly testing itself and the audience with the epilogue.

The First Slam Dunk 2022
Captures the art form of both basketball and animation wonderfully, and absolutely nails the climax, all while reframing the character that’s usually given less focus. Excellent storytelling and an excellent adaptation.

Chocolat 1988
What an incredible debut, Claire Denis has such a strong grasp on both perspective and nuance that really surprised me. There’s influence from African filmmakers that really bolsters the depth of the messages at play. The writing and filmmaking in Chocolat can only be born from both great experience and empathy.
