I watch this every year, and every year, when it gets to Miss Jessica's psychedelic "I'm gonna be me" song, I'm like "wtf, I don't remember this at ALL."
Film School Drop Outs, Week 2: Gloria Swanson
Gloria Swanson is a terrifyingly good actress.
Billy Wilder's use of actors and directors playing themselves as a way to comment on the filmmaking practices of the day, and the transition from silent films to talkies, was a stroke of genius (poor Buster Keaton looked absolutely fucking miserable, although that might have been cause he was losing [?] at bridge).
Max von Stroheim might be one of my favorite actors of all time, despite the fact that I've only seen him in this and Grand Illusion.
What a final scene. Heartbreaking and glorious and sad.
