    The Wrestler

    ★★★★

Two things have happened since the last time I watched The Wrestler in 2013: I got in to professional wrestling and I've hated everything Aronofsky has made. Luckily I didn't let The Whale poison this rewatch of The Wrestler. The story of a aged wrestler sacrificing his body for the fans and glory of the sport. To Randy "The Ram" Robinson the ring is the only place in the world that makes sense, the one place he'll always be loved…

    Before Sunset

    ★★★★½

Before Sunset is both more romantic and more cynical than its predecessor. They're older, less hopeful, more pragmatic, and more bitter. Themes of sex and fidelity are more prevalent and they're less innocently romantic. The smaller time frame adds more tension to their conversation, and I love how film creates mood by basking in the glow of a setting sun. The first two Before movies are genuinely sexy.

The short uses more character…

De Palma went off. The film's tight hilarious and shocking opening 30 minutes and its psychosexual madhouse nightmare ending is some of the best stuff I've ever seen from De Palma. And the middle portion is kind of a goofy detective movie that takes large narrative leaps to take the opening setpiece to its closing setpiece. It's cinema at its most vibrant and alive.
