I was so worried for another January flop but this was fun! Harvey Guillén was fantastic, happy to see him here. Parts had a low-stakes, almost dull feel, maybe due to a bit of overexplanation; many scenes could have been more tightly cut. As someone who avoided that notoriously spoiler-heavy trailer, I did enjoy a lot of the mechanics of the plot. Though I did not love it, I liked it! More Harvey Guillén in things please

at first, a little boring but threatening to become interesting, but WOW the scene with the medium completely tanked the film. the ghost camera gimmick worked about 20% of the time, and 15 of those were in the first 40 minutes. it just did not really feel like a character. lucy liu was some kind of criminal (kept vague) who wanted to fuck her son (who looked 27)..? writing was half serviceable, half diabolical and usually stagey; “there’s some kind of PRESENCE in this house,” “synthetic fent”

    january is so back

a cinematic masterpiece. halle berry gives the performance of a lifetime as a woman struggling between her identities: her mundane existence as patience phillips and her exciting, new life as catwoman. pitof uses the camera to get a deep look into every inch of every location, using like 40 shots in every scene and editing them ALL in. no matter what. truly a remarkable film.
