Does this film raise the standards for other Netflix-style, crowd-pleasing romantic dramedies?
I would argue it does.
Does it manage to go beyond that by offering a more layered narrative?
Not quite so (but it flirts with the idea).

we all know this would smash as a play, I'm just glad it is a film
I initially felt some aspects of the film awkward.. then realized that they do because they don't fit to the modern narrative of a happy life tied to success, recognition, power, wealth.
Yet, Paterson seems happy.
As the film unfolds, you come to see what he sees - that happiness doesn't always roar. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it simply is.
