So this is allegedly set in 1980s Soviet Union (according to its own convoluted timeline) yet she uses a late 90s/early 00s looking laptop to apply to the Navy using THE INTERNET. Likewise there are multiple scenes of flash drives, modern hard drives, high resolution webcams, modern looking operating systems and 2001-looking Nokia phones Where in spacetime does this very confused film exist?
I don’t really see the point of rating films like this, particularly if you are applying the standards and expectations you would with a normal film. This is more of a moving painting or experiment with a medium than a film in any traditional sense and it was quite unique for the time it came out.
I honestly don’t know why this film is so hated and subsequently obscure. Yeah, the premise would be a bit desperate and creepy if it were carried out reality but, ultimately, it all feels pretty lighthearted and farcical. The entire world Peter inhabits is like a hyperreal take on suburban weirdness that, at times, reminds me a bit of “The Adventures of Pete and Pete.” I also find his occasionally witty narration to make Peter a lovable loser, at the…
In a word: harrowing. I don’t wish to repeat what has already been said by previous reviewers because I agree with most of their points. The most salient point is how split most people feel between love and hatred for this film, which has to be some kind of accomplishment.
