  An odd film to evaluate. In isolation, there’s so much here to admire. Cooper and Mulligan are fantastic, the cinematography is gorgeous and the music is great. I like almost every aspect of the film individually, but put together, it just feels like something’s missing. I don’t feel the movie had much to say other than Bradley Cooper really wants an Oscar (and hell, he might get it, he’s fantastic in this).

  The movie gets credit for knowing exactly what it is. It’s dumb, brutal and undeniably fun. Maybe not quite as fun as the trailers made it look, but some really enjoyable moments. Banks keeps the film in the pocket. The actors take things just serious enough to sell the plot, but still have fun hamming it up. Margo Martindale is the best part (no surprise).
