  Damien Chazelle knows how to bring things to a climax. In Whiplash, he showed he can do it deftly on a small scale. In La La Land, he showed he can do it on a large albeit one dimensional scale. Babylon proves he is capable of handling it at a complex and multi faceted way. He still struggles with pacing.   I loved this movie. It twisted me up and took me for a ride. There was a fun ridiculous movie on top with a dark murderous secret simmering underneath. And it it worked! As the viewer we would have no way of knowing how the layers would peel back, we can only hope that it’s done well (like in Knives Out). And it worked!! I hope we get more of these with this level of quality.
