  A shocking, rollicking ride through several pretty heavy things this dude went through that all dovetail wonderfully much like life itself. We have a sexual orientation and coming out story (one that I thought was done particularly well, given the way many parts of it mirrored elements of my own), a sexual abuse story, and, most central and probably the only one you're aware of walking into this, a story involving a crazy stalker, and the way they dynamically bounce…

  One heck of a strong debut from a director who would go on to make some of the best American contributions to the cinema canon, Hard Eight features a star-studded cast of then mostly unknowns that incredibly sell everything a debut film has to offer. While on the surface this may appear to be typical, tender moments throughout as well as a maintained focus on the characters give it the gravitas to stand as something more than just a well-shot crime thriller. Wonderful vibes.
