I could stare at Mackenzie Blue Eyes for hours, but this still felt like a xerox of a xerox of a xerox. It crosses every T (zing) to safely count as a Terminator film: the explosive freeway chase, glimpses of a skull-paved future, and endless robot wrasslin'. T2, however, transcended the material with superior direction and pathos. None of the other series entries come close, and Tim Miller can only offer another competent genre movie. Still waiting for the "intelligent machines" to stop going after targets in human form and just become a virus or a meteor already.
The cuts into The Shining, including re-casts, are superbly done. The psychic battles are something the next round of X-Men films should pay close attention to. Rose the Hat's astral projection scenes are gorgeous. And the score, full of weird white noise and tormented souls, is epic. Probably my new fave among the modern King adaptations, edging out IT.
My absolute favorite. It combines so many storytelling elements I love: a used-future vibe, sharp turns into horror, and characters who don't bullshit around. Seeing first-time viewers react to the chest burst is always fun, despite the somewhat dated effects. But what has aged extremely well is the minimalist score, the claustrophobia, and the killer narrative flow.
