Louis Malle's "Zazie dans le Metro" stands out not only within his body of work but in the entire realm of cinema. It's an anomaly that's too absurd to fit the mold of a traditional narrative film, yet too coherent to be a Surrealist experiment. Its good-natured tone defies categorization as satire, while its unsettling moments prevent it from being a straightforward farce. The ten-year-old protagonist Zazie's mischievous smile can be heartwarming yet hints at a darker side. The film's gag-filled, anarchic storyline flirts with incoherence but remains tightly woven, with its barrage of dreamlike humor constantly challenging the audience's rationality.
The first of many irresolvable mysteries in Rivette’s work, Paris Belongs to Us is less about uncovering details than it is about getting drowned in them. There’s a quiet madness to the way the film transforms Paris into a labyrinth, both geographically and spiritually.
