I guess I wanted it to be woman under the influence 2.0. First two chapters were beautiful. Later stuff seemed iffy. The music over the chapter titles made those beautiful shots feel like screensavers

The Trick 2024
Beautiful movie, in some moments sharply funny and in others suddenly emotionally puzzling and even brutal. Jake Squire brings life to a character whose struggle involves obliqueness. Found myself watching most closely during his interactions with Lily (outstanding performance by Leanne Tarrab worthy of mention!) and at the end, which I found stirring and cosmically right-seeming—the way it hits reminds me of the ending of Old Joy, a sort of refusal to let us settle into an easy resolution, somehow frenetic even as the movie slows to a halt.

The Uninvited 2024
initial scattered thoughts:
a total play-as-movie movie, felt there were some glaring blind spots in the writing/framing of certain thematic issues (some slightly big oopsies & missed opportunities), was laughing imagining what Pat would say about what felt to me at times to be a naive and undercooked feminism, thought scenes with the son went the hardest/had the most heart (went the heartest), also enjoyed some of the stuff with Sammy
Movie felt tightly managed and well done but I did not “whoop”. Q&A killed the critic in me, I want to see all labors of love succeedTranslated from by
