  Can you make an indictment of capitalism from material that is inherently capitalist? Can you champion feminism from material that inherently subscribes to heteronormative gender roles? The answer to both is yes, and this movie proves it.

  All this time, I had expected this movie to be a quasi-dramatic history lesson on white supremacy in the US. Instead, it's a family melodrama with a thrilling score and gorgeous cinematography that strikes a glancing blow at racist American legacies, rather than landing squarely in the gut. The sights and sounds buoy an otherwise feeble storyline which is hastily and inadequately resolved at the end. Yet for a movie that is 25 years old, its content and commentary feel disconcertingly relevant in 21st Century America.
