The Substance 2024
Throws around body horror in a "look over there!" way to distract from its banal screenplay. Irked by the seeming contract everyone’s abiding by in which they’re obliged to refer to this one as Cronenbergian; his use of body-horror, whilst rarely immaculate, has never been wasted on a half-baked motif. I Saw the TV Glow 2024
Moreso a note on nostalgia for me; childhood as a transcendental product that one would devastate their life to identify with once more. I assume that’s an idea congruent with all viewers, however. Its allegories pertaining to cinephilia and transgenderism were palpable but felt more like cursory glances than matured pursuits. Monotonous at points, it often ascends before backsliding onto the work of the gaffer, which became repetitive after 40 minutes. Poor Things 2023
A sorely misguided attempt of female emancipation which manifests itself in a frankly humiliating piece of shit. Making a nympho picture that doesn’t directly approximate infantilising porn should hardly be a difficult feat, yet Lanthimos proves himself as self-sycophantic pervert once again in Poor Things. A rapey, intolerable watch with dogmatic aestheticism which works overtime to make this film in any way interesting. Walked out with 40 minutes left. Amused by Lanthimos’ credence in a 100% female orgasm rate however!
