Very very long, and sometimes very boring. But the last third is great!

I can see why this caused an outrage. Very unbiblical but from the intro it is clear the intention was not to BE biblical and it doesn’t seem like Martin Scorsese intended to make fun of or blaspheme Jesus, but instead to adopt the setting and to grapple with his struggle between spirit and flesh. It’s insightful to see that someone who became as successful as Scorsese did, chose to make a very bold and honest expression of his own…

There is something different about this film. It is separate from all the films I'd seen from this early era. These waves the people watched are the same waves that I watch. Nothing like that from films of this time connected me in that way. And in addition to that, it tells a simple story, but the telling is beautiful. This is the earliest film I can think of that I have had an emotional response to. What an achievement for 1910.

This might be Denis Villeneuve's most emotion film. This film nearly broke me. Incredibly written, masterfully structured, and beautifully acted. At times it was so intense I might have had zero blood-flow in my knuckles. The moments of straightforward, inevitable violence leave a massive imprint on your mind. And even in the moments in-between, he crafts such a unique feeling. I cannot get enough of the atmospheres that Villeneuve creates.
