Plato’s Academy manages to not take itself too seriously while also being honest, genuine, and reflective of the deficiencies of contemporary Greek society. Attenberg 2010
Definitely a defining film for the Greek weird wave, Attenberg really felt like a journey. It sure takes its time, but it manages to go from distant, alienating, and outright weird to humane, engaging, and genuinely moving. Its pacing can be difficult but it effectively brings the audience into Marina’s world. A lot funnier than anticipated and unexpectedly emotional, Attenberg is definitely the most uniquely bizarre coming of age movie that I have seen.
PS: Vaggelis Mourikis is the greatest ever gift to Greek cinema.
