    The Gorge

A confounding film. The first hour is a delight, because of course it is with these two leads and I was vibing on that, but for the second hour it wastes them on hoary action sci-fi reminiscent of Resident Evil including vfx work which looks 25 years old. The gorge itself should have remained an unknowable entity providing backdrop to all the business in that first hour. There is a good film here torpedoed by a misguided idea or terrible studio notes.

The first half of the film has a sort of vintage Tim Burton quality to it, which is nice since he seemingly doesn’t want to make that stuff anymore, with a bit of ‘80s ugly duckling genre mixed in. Preferred that first half to the second which wasn’t as much fun as it hurriedly tried to work in the Frankenstein bits by shifting Lisa to an out of established character jerk to propel the story. Overall it’s fun but some of the shine is lost. In the end I’m here for Kathryn Newton and as always she’s a peach.

The premise is a setup for quality folk horror. Instead it is baffling choices quickly piling up while refusing to commit to anything and ends up as a ghost story so lazy it feels inserted via re-shoots.

This is one of the finest films ever made. It is pure cinema. No notes.
