Great performances anchor what is a mostly perfunctory adaptation with a (presumably) very small budget.

The Card Player 2003
Label me as a late-period Argento apologist if you like. I'm at peace with that.
For as fundamentally messy as this film is, I was undoubtedly entertained. I totally understand that the hyperfocus on (then) modern technologies is haphazardly implemented, that the story sacrifices good sense in the name of spectacle - I'd even go so far as to agree that Argento's unique identity as a filmmaker rarely translates to the final product here: but, regardless, this is a sturdy, tense procedural police thriller that entertained me throughout. That's all I expected of The Card Player, and it delivered.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning 1985
Well, you certainly can't fault this one for its ambition.
There is so much going on here (the continuing story of Tommy and his attempts to deal with the emotional aftermath of The Final Chapter, the happenings in and around a mental institution, the re-emergence of fake Jason) that the film doesn't really have all that much room to breathe - these disperate ideas, plotlines, and characters rarely form into something cohesive and stable.
With that being said though, this remains a entertaining, efficient slice of slasher cinema. I'd be lying if I claimed that wasn't consistently engaged throughout the film's rather brief 90 minute runtime.
