A performance deserving of its Oscar
It's easy to see why Aranofsky was drawn to creating an adaptation of The Whale. Like many of his films, it draws on dark themes of self destructive behaviour, addiction, trauma and grief.
The film challenges it's audience by creating an uncomfortable viewing experience, yet encourages us to set aside our perception of beauty and empathise with Charlie (Brendan Fraser), a man suffering with morbid obesity.
